Our Qualifications

Engineers, scientists and associates at AFT have experience in the purification of gases and liquids dating back to 1971. AFT specializes in the critical purification of biogas, primarily the removal of organosilicon contaminants such as siloxanes, silanes, silanols, halosilanols, silicanes, harmful VOCs, and sulfur-bearing compounds.  AFT designs, tests and builds systems to match unique individual customer requirements. AFT also provides expertise to the customer to assist in the management of consistent biogas product quality through various testing programs and service options.

Applied Filter Technology, Inc. (AFT) has been designing, building and operating systems based on the "state-of-the-art" SAGTM technology for removal of siloxanes and similar silicon-bearing organics from biogas since March of 1996. SAGTM technology refers to a proprietary process that is custom-engineered for each end user. SAGTM was developed for fuel gases and mixtures of inert gases and fuel gases that contain more than one contaminant group (siloxanes, halogenated organics, and organic sulfur compounds) that must to be removed to extremely low levels. AFT SAGTM systems effectively remove siloxanes and other undesirable contaminants from a combined daily flow of over 100 Million SCFD (2.8 MM Nm3D) of landfill, digester and other methane-containing gas streams.

Other biogas treatment technologies have been added since the develpment of the SAGTM Process.  For hydrogen sulfide control, there is the SULFRPackTM Process and SulfrStrip process for very high sulfur applications.  For Total VOC removal, AFT has a regenerable system called the SWOPTM Process.

The capabilities of AFT are:

  1. Complete biogas analysis for organosilicons, VOCs, and sulfur species.
  2. Budgetary evaluation of equipment and operating costs for treatment system components or complete treatment system.
  3. Pilot study design, equipment, and operation.
  4. Full-scale system design, construction, installation supervision and start-up.
  5. Siloxanes removal performance warranty.
  6. Ongoing system performance monitoring.
  7. Media replacement and disposal.
  8. Technical support.

Most of the applications for AFT SAGTM system technology are for protection of engines and turbines that generate electricity; however, other applications such as SCR catalyst bed protection and boiler protection are becoming increasingly important. AFT has experience in all these areas.

The principal of AFT has over 20 years of experience in the analysis and treatment of gases of all types and especially municipal digester and landfill gases. Paul M. Tower is President and CEO with 33 years of sales, marketing and engineering experience. Mr. Tower has a Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin.  AFT maintains a broad network of strategic alliance partners possessing decades of experience in gas separations engineering, manufacturing, gas testing and method development, energy development, exhaust emissions reduction and field technical support.
